Who we were and who we are
Times change but our lineup doesn’t. Here you have a list of the founders of the Playwrights Circle that started the organization a decade ago. Here you can read about those founders, and from that, you will see the origin of the Playwrights Circle and all of the connections that had to be created for it to succeed.
Tony Padilla, Co-Founder and Producing Artistic Director
Cuban-born playwright and director Angelantonio Padilla has been directing plays since his high-school days in Pacific Grove, California where he directed works by Edward Albee and Anton Chechov. As an actor at The American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, he appeared in Oedipus with Ellis Rabb and Ray Reinhardt, and in Saint Joan, both directed by William Bal; and in Hadrian VII and Rosencrantz and Gildenstern are Dead, both directed by Allen Fletcher.
Padilla has produced and directed many of Playwrights’ Circle award-winning productions, including the world premieres of Naked by the River by Michael T. Folie; The Bard, the Babe and the Baron, by David Christner; Greetings and Salutations by Kristin Johnson; Two Men and a Plane by Richard Stampolis, Maternal Spirits by James Caputo and his own plays, Endangered Species, Reckoning and Work of Love.
Ron Schwartz, Associate Producing Artistic Director
Born into a theatrical and musical family, Ron worked in New York on radio and stage productions as a child and young man. He took a little time off to study and practice medicine, never losing his contact with and love of the theatre. Ron came to Playwrights’ Circle in 2005 and has been active in play selection direction and performance.
Rosemary Mallett, Secretary and Associate Producer
Rosemary Mallett has been teaching Theatre Arts at Palm Springs High School since 1981. She is affectionately known as the “Drama Mama.” During this time she has produced and directed over 55 plays. Her productions have received high acclaim, and she has many students who are working in the industry today. She returned to the stage after 26 years to appear in Playwrights’ Circle’s production of David Christner’s The Bard, the Babe and the Baron directed by Tony Padilla.
Ms. Mallett is a graduate of Cal State Long Beach class of ’69 and received her Master’s Degree from San Bernadino College class of ’94. She has been recognized for her excellence in education and has studied in New York City at the famed Uta Hagen Studios. She worked for five years at the South Coast Repertory as an actress, teacher, and costume designer.
